She’s also a leader – raising money at charity events, working with influential members of the community, and being the biggest champion of those she’s trying to help.

She tries to spend time with friends and family, but often works late into the night and can’t turn her mind off from thinking about his business.

Last week I attended a webinar lead by my business BFF, Lulu Kitololo, on how important it is to put your uniqueness into your business.

By being yourself, you are better able to communicate and connect with your ideal customers, ultimately helping your business grow. It’s what she calls Soulful Branding.

To maintain authenticity in our business, she encourages us to create a business philosophy – something that encompasses our personal values and beliefs, as well as our experiences and interest.

Yesterday, I briefly accepted the fact that I might die.

That tomorrow would not come.

That the hopes and dreams and ambitions I had been talking about just moments before with friends at Metta would be left behind, unfulfilled.

I thought about my family far away in the US. Knowing they’d still be asleep and unable to speak aloud to make a phone call, I sent them text messages to let them I love them.

I worried about my business partner and all the things that she would need to pick up in my absence and hoped she’d be able to go on without me. I texted her, and she kept me calm and positive.

I remembered the past 38 years of my life, grateful for everything and regretful of nothing.

I experienced the longest hour of my life. And then it came to an end.

Starting a business produces a mixture of emotions.

On one hand, you’ll have a lot of high points. It’s exhilarating to finally be working on something you’re passionate about. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by other people with great ideas and the courage to do something with those ideas. It’s rewarding to make progress towards building a business that you’re proud of.

And yet, on the other hand, there are some really LOW lows. It can be absolutely terrifying to not know what lies ahead. It can be frustrating to not see things happen as quickly or easily as you would like for them to. And it can be devastating on the days when you think it may not work.

Starting a business isn’t ever going to be easy, but when the low points come on too strong or too often, you might also find it tough to stay motivated.

The fire that once fueled you has died down. The little things that used to excite you now seem like a chore. You have so many things to do, yet you’re finding it difficult to make a start on any of them.
