I read this quote from Theodore Roosevelt recently in my new favourite book about productivity – the 5AM Club and it came at the perfect time.
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
One of my clients had been sending me links to her competition. This constant comparison to others caused her to doubt whether she should go ahead with her idea.
Then during a consultation, another woman confessed that she was jealous of a friend whose husband provided financial support while business was slow. She had to do it all on her own and thought about going back into employment to ride out the storm.
comparison comes in so many forms
In your personal life, you may size up everyone you come into contact with.
“She’s prettier than me. Or slimmer than me. Her husband seems amazing, yet I’m here single. She earns more than I do. Her house is bigger. She can manage everything, and I can barely find time in the day to breathe.”
And in business, you become obsessed with your competition.
You watch what they’re doing online and offline. Then you look at all the stuff you aren’t doing. They seem so much further ahead than you. You automatically assume they’re more successful than you are.
You start doubting whether you should be in the game at all, because if they’re already doing it so well, then why should you?
it’s time to stop comparing yourself to others
When you get so caught up in what everyone else is doing not only does that comparison steal your joy, but it also steals your time, your dreams, your motivation and your sanity.
In today’s video, I share 4 things that you can try instead.
over to you
