Let me ask you something…
How does the word “money” make you feel?
For many of us, money will stir up all kinds of emotions.
You may have been telling yourself for years that you’re “not good” with money.
Maybe it feels really overwhelming to look at your financials, so you avoid it at all costs.
Then when you’re unable to put it off any longer (e.g. to file annual accounts), you’re filled with guilt, shame and anxiety.
Or maybe you think you’re “good” with money. You’re on top of your finances, don’t fear a spreadsheet and are confident with your pricing.
Yet you’re still stressing each month about how much you don’t have and worrying about how to plug the gaps.
Whichever applies to you, just know that you’re not alone!
But it’s time to shift your money mindset.
Money is your pathway to freedom.
Your relationship with money is often influenced by beliefs and fears that were formed long ago.
Maybe you grew up in an environment that talked about money in a negative way.
Perhaps you watched yourself and others struggle with financial challenges.
Maybe you believe that to have money, you must work very hard and sacrifice what’s important to you.
Or maybe you believe that it’s evil because wealthy people aren’t the nicest of people.
Whatever you believe around money, it’s impacting your business.
Negative emotions around money – fear, anxiety, guilt, and shame – can create a barrier between you and the success you want.
When you feel overwhelmed by your numbers or avoid looking at them altogether, it can lead to poor decisions, like underpricing or spending more than you earn.
These insecurities can drain your energy, making it harder to move forward with clarity and purpose.
And even if you think you’re “good” with money, there can still be underlying beliefs at play that affect your business.
When I started to really dig into my own money mindset, I realised I had a lot of fear. Not about the numbers themselves, but fear about not having enough. Fear that whatever I build can all come crumbling down.
Fear that what I desire will always be out of reach.
This type of fear – though it may seem subtle – can still impact your business.
In the past, it caused me to overwork or say yes to everything just to bring in revenue.
It made me hesitant to invest in people or resources, even though I knew it could help me grow.
It made me lack appreciation for what I had, because I felt there was still so far to go.
While I was operating from this place of fear, it was really hard to attract abundance.
But here’s the good news: you can change your money mindset.
You can face your fears and start thinking differently about money.
You can challenge your old beliefs and open yourself up to new possibilities.
You can acknowledge your past mistakes and have gratitude for the lessons they taught you.
You can shift your energy and start to attract abundance.
You can begin to feel more confident and less fearful.
You can be wealthy and still be a good person.
So, where do you start?
Journal about your own beliefs about money.
- What messages about money did you absorb growing up?
- What emotions come up when you think about your numbers?
- What financial memories do you have – both positive and negative? What can you learn from them?
- In what ways have you undercharged, over-delivered, or avoided financial decisions because of fear?
- What would change if you believed there was always enough?
The first step to shifting your mindset is bringing these beliefs into the light.
Then sit with them, question them, challenge them. And ask yourself if you’re ready to believe something different.
It takes work.
Shifting your mindset isn’t something that happens overnight. But if you commit to doing the work and fully decide that you want things to change, they can.
